I saw Chef Mamusu's at the Vegetarian Festival and got a $12 sampler plate, which consisted of:
1. Red couscous
2. Juicy delicious collards
3. Hush puppies - I don't usually like hush puppies but these were well seasoned, stuffed with veggies, and not too dry!
4. Jerk vegetable pie with pineapple sauce, my love :D
5. Plantains, the dry and not the squishy kind (and really good with pineapple sauce)
If you're a big person you can finish this plate in one sitting, but I saved my leftovers for dinner. The staff are fantastic. Just FYI, there was a 50 cent surcharge for credit cards. I'm not sure they do that at the restaurant but no biggie.
This place is amazing. All the food I have had there has been incredibly rich and filling, but not in a heavy way. The service there is very knowledgeable and loving, carefully explaining all the different kinds of food, asking questions in order to best pair you with a meal you want to eat.
The servings are also large for how much you pay so you get a meal and a half to two meals per entree.
Can't get this type of food where I live so wanted to try it while visiting Richmond. Was thoroughly impressed. Started with ginger-pineapple drink; delightful flavor but I needed ice to tone down the ginger. Tasty cassava fries are crisp on the outside and tender on the inside and come with an amazing veggie puree dipping sauce. Ordered the oxtail, which also came with plantains, rice with beans and cornbread. Absolutely amazing flavor, bold but not overwhelming spicing. Rice provides a good balance to both the savoriness and moistness of the oxtail. Cornbread was light textured and sweet, quite to my liking. Plantains were tender and sweet. Staff were very friendly and I was served promptly (beverage in 1-2 minutes, appetizer in less than 5 min, and entree in about 15 min).
The food is divine!! The plantains were cooked perfectly and the sauce was a concoction of palatable greatness. The tastes married well!! I had the Liberian Rice Jollof, a mixture of rice, seasonings ,mixed vegetables and sauteed onions with a side of plantains and Liberian corn bread...all...Excellent....I had to hug the cook Chef Mamusu, and such a beautiful woman and can cooooook!! The food was light and whimsical packed with nothing but flavor..and Jazz, the server was so professional and very in tuned with the menu...her suggestions were dead on..the ambiance in the restaurant was so inviting, it made you want to eat , from the decor to the beautiful music playing....last but not least was the superb Ginger Tea....loved it..I will be back again, and again, and again!!! oh I shout out to Marvin for his expertise and inviting persona!!!
